When you get or renew a driver's license or ID at the DMV, you get automatically registered to vote — unless you say no. You just check a box saying you are a U.S. citizen. It is under penalty of perjury (that means big trouble if you lie). But there is no check right then to prove you are a citizen. No one asks to see a birth certificate or passport. Connecticut law does not require proof of citizenship to register. It works on the honor system, just like in California. That opens the door to mistakes — or worse. We need simple fixes: check citizenship proof before adding anyone to the voter rolls, and keep the lists clean. Every legal vote matters.
