Before Obamacare (before 2014): Insurance companies could say: “Sorry, you had asthma when you were 8. We won’t cover you at all,” or “We’ll cover you, but your new bill is $2,000 a month.” After Obamacare (2014-today): The law says: “No. Insurance companies HAVE to sell you a plan and HAVE to cover your pre-existing condition at the same price as everyone else.” The problem now: Because of that rule, premiums for healthy families went way up (sometimes double or triple). Many people lost their old cheap plans. Republican promise: “We will KEEP the part that says ‘you can’t be denied or charged more because you were sick before.
