"Other States Provide Public Officials' Financial Info Online—Why Does Connecticut Make You Request It?" 🚨 Why Is It SO Hard to See What Connecticut’s Officials Are Doing With Their Money? 🚨 In Connecticut, the only way to access the financial records (SFIs) of public officials is through a formal request process. 💡 Here’s the Problem: In Connecticut, if you want to know where your public officials get their money or what businesses they’re involved in (so you can see if they’re being fair when making decisions), it’s not easy to find out! Unlike many other states where you can see this info online in just a few clicks, Connecticut makes you submit a formal request — which takes time and effort. For vulnerable populations this process becomes even more difficult. ❌ This makes it harder for people to check if officials are doing their jobs fairly without being influenced by their own money or interests. 🔍 What Other States Do Right: In places like New York, Florida, and California, public financial info about politicians is available online for anyone to see—no requests, no waiting, no hassles. The solution: 📢 We should have the same easy access here in Connecticut! Increased Transparency: Unrestricted access ensures the public can easily see where officials have financial interests, building trust between the government and its citizens. Enhanced Accountability: Public officials are more likely to act in the public's best interest when their financial dealings are open for everyone to see, reducing the risk of corruption or conflicts of interest. Faster Access to Information: Immediate online access to SFIs eliminates the delays caused by the current formal request system, allowing real-time monitoring of officials’ financial activities. Improved Public Trust: When citizens can easily view financial information, it increases confidence that elected officials are acting ethically and responsibly, fostering greater trust in the government. Encourages Media and Public Scrutiny: Journalists and watchdog groups can quickly access critical information without bureaucratic hurdles, improving the ability to investigate potential conflicts of interest. Deters Unethical Behavior: Knowing that financial disclosures are easily accessible acts as a deterrent for officials who might otherwise engage in unethical practices for personal gain. Equal Access for All: Removing restrictions levels the playing field, allowing anyone—regardless of education, resources, or connections—to access this vital information without jumping through hoops. Reduced Bureaucracy: Eliminating the formal request system streamlines the process, reducing paperwork and administrative costs for both the public and the government. Strengthened Democracy: Open access to financial disclosures empowers citizens to be better informed and more engaged in the democratic process, leading to more informed voting and civic participation. Alignment with Best Practices: Many other states and countries already offer unrestricted access to this information, and adopting the same standards in Connecticut would align with modern transparency practices, improving the state's reputation for ethical governance. In short, unrestricted access to financial information promotes a more open, accountable, and fair government, benefiting both the public and the integrity of the political system. The people of Connecticut are incredible—hardworking, compassionate, and always striving for the best for their communities. We believe in fairness, equality, and doing what’s right for everyone, not just a select few. As citizens who care deeply about the well-being of our state, we deserve nothing less than full transparency from our government. Having clear, easy access to public officials' financial information is a crucial step in ensuring that our leaders are working for the good of all. Connecticut’s amazing people deserve a government that is as open and honest as they are. #Connecticut #IloveCT #truth #usa #whistleblower #advocate #CT #inclusionmatters #weloveyou #ethics #compassion #solutions #abiresources #taxes
