Sledding is a fun winter activity enjoyed by many people, especially children. However, it can also be dangerous and lead to serious injuries, including brain injuries. In fact, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 20,000 children under the age of 15 are treated for sledding-related injuries in emergency rooms each year. The most common cause of brain injuries during sledding is collisions. Sledders can collide with trees, rocks, other sleds, or even stationary objects like fences or walls. The force of the impact can cause the brain to bounce around inside the skull, leading to a concussion or more severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).
