Why We Need Sleep If you have ever felt foggy after a poor nightâs sleep, it wonât surprise you that sleep significantly impacts brain function. First, a healthy amount of sleep is vital for âbrain plasticity,â or the brainâs ability to adapt to input. If we sleep too little, we become unable to process what weâve learned during the day and we have more trouble remembering it in the future. Researchers also believe that sleep may promote the removal of waste products from brain cellsâsomething that seems to occur less efficiently when the brain is awake. Tips for Better Sleep Good sleep habits (sometimes referred to as âsleep hygieneâ) can help you get a good nightâs sleep. Some habits that can improve your sleep health: - Be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends - Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature - Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smart phones, from the bedroom - Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime - Get some exercise. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night. Sleep is vital to the rest of the body too. When people donât get enough sleep, their health risks rise. Symptoms of depression, seizures, high blood pressure and migraines worsen. Immunity is compromised, increasing the likelihood of illness and infection. Sleep also plays a role in metabolism: Even one night of missed sleep can create a prediabetic state in an otherwise healthy person.
